DescriptionMen and women dance in the interior of a Shaker meeting house. The women are all dressed alike in white dresses, shawls, and bonnets. They stand in four rows on the left facing the men. The men are all dressed alike in black vests, shirts, and trousers. They stand in four rows on the right facing the women. Two men appear to be African-American. Some are elderly. One man is bald. Hats and coats hang from pegs on the walls between the windows. Another woman sits on a bench in the left foreground. A man's top hat and cane are on a bench in the right foreground.

NotesSource Note: The composition is clearly related to the illustration of Shakers at Enfield in John Warner Barber's Historical Collections of Connecticut (1836).
