DescriptionVarious sized ceramic and glass fragments (as described below) from the late-eighteenth and first half of the nineteenth centuries. These fragments were uncovered at a site in Hartford, Connecticut, near Gold Street cemetery, just south of Pearl Street. Fragments that are grouped together are related, from the same ceramic object or same type of object.

.2: Redware with machine-turned decoration.
.3: Buff-colored salt-glaze stoneware, brown glaze interior.
.4: Grey stoneware with a black glaze, part of a handle.
.5: Redware with remnants of glaze on interior.
.6a-b: Salt-glaze stoneware, brown glaze interior.
.7a-b: Salt-glaze stoneware, brown glaze interior.
.8a-d: Redware with remnants of glaze on interior.
.9a-f: Stoneware, salt-glaze exterior, brown glaze interior.
.10a-c: Earthenware with a blue-tinted glaze (pearlware) and transfer-printed underglaze cobalt blue "Willowware" pattern; a Chinese structure surrounded by stylized trees is visible on the largest fragment (.a), and a portion of the border is visible on .c .
.11: Earthenware with a blue-tinted glaze (pearlware) and transfer-printed underglaze cobalt blue decoration.
.12a-b, d-k: Dark green bottle glass; portion of base and nine fragments.

.14a-g: Dark olive green glass with a light iridescent coating; portion of base and six fragments from a bottle.

.17: Round foot and stem of blown colorless lead glass, with pontil mark on the bottom.

.19: Pressed colorless non-lead glass with a light aqua tint, starburst pattern.
.20: Lead glass.
.21: Colorless non-lead glass.
.22: Blown three-mold colorless lead glass; bottom of a vessel with diamond pattern surrounding a pontil mark.
.23: Blown three-mold colorless lead glass; with a light iridescent coating; portion of a vessel in what is known as a geometric "Starburst" pattern.
.24: Mold-blown colorless lead glass, with vertical lines that are part of a larger pattern.
.25: Thin, colorless lead glass.
.26: Pattern-molded light green glass, with a diamond pattern.
.27: Blown light green glass bottle neck, with air bubbles.

.33a-d: Cream colored earthenware with a clear glaze (creamware). It is possible that .a is ironstone, mechanically-molded.
.34a-b: Earthenware with a blue-tinted glaze (pearlware) with hand-painted underglaze cobalt blue decoration; both pieces from the same handle for a larger ceramic object.
.34c: Earthenware with a blue-tinted glaze (pearlware).
.34d: Earthenware with a blue-tinted glaze (pearlware) with hand-painted underglaze cobalt blue decoration; part of a handle.
.35a-e: Earthenware with a blue-tinted glaze (pearlware).
.36a-d: Cream-colored earthenware (creamware), possibly with a blue-tinted glaze (pearlware).
.37a-b: Cream-colored earthenware (creamware). Fragment .a is from a plate with a scalloped rim, and it has an impressed heart on the bottom.
.38a-c: Earthenware with a blue-tinted glaze (pearlware). All three fragments have a beaded rim.
.39a,c,e,f: Earthenware with a blue-tinted glaze (pearlware) and transfer-printed underglaze cobalt blue decoration; fragment .c has an impressed maker's mark from the James & Ralph Clews factory (1818-1834) in Staffordshire, England and a partial pattern showing a castle and trees.
.39b,d: [not present at original cataloging]
.40a-b: Earthenware with a blue-tinted glaze (pearlware) and transfer-printed underglaze cobalt blue pattern (unknown), border and mark of "STONE CHINA" inside a rectangular label; both fragments are part of a larger teacup or tea bowl.
.41: Cream-colored earthenware with a clear glaze (creamware); part of a shallow dish or plate.
.42: Cream-colored earthenware with a clear glaze (creamware), a portion of the rim has recessed semi-circles.
.43: Earthenware with a translucent green glaze at the rim, raised floral and wheat decoration.
.44: Earthenware with a blue-tinted glaze (pearlware), blue, brown, and green hand-painted decoration; portion of a rim.
.45: Earthenware with a blue-tinted glaze (pearlware) and transfer-printed underglaze cobalt blue decoration.
.46a-b: Earthenware with a blue-tinted glaze (pearlware) and transfer-printed underglaze cobalt blue decoration.





NotesHistorical Note: The object file contains a map drawn by the donors illustrating the exact location in Hartford, Connecticut, in which these fragments were found. According to the map, the fragments were found in an area that includes the northeasternmost tip of Gold Street Cemetery, as well as part of Gold Street in front of both the cemetery and the "building with white tower."
