DescriptionScalloped-edged, shallow, round Chinese export porcelain dish with hand-painted underglaze cobalt blue decoration showing a Chinese landscape; the dish is a type of Chinese export porcelain known as Cantonware. The central Chinese landscape consists of a willow tree with a Chinese structure to the right. A river with a Chinese junk runs through the landscape, with a bridge in the foreground, and houses, hills, and mountains in the distance. The central landscape is surrounded by concentric borders. First there is a band of blue with darker lines creating a diamond pattern inside. This border is surrounded by a field of white and then a "Canton" border, consisting of a scalloped line with parallel lines of hatching running inside. The "Canton" border is surrounded by a blue border, with darker lines creating a diamond pattern, along the scalloped rim of the dish. The outside of the dish is decorated with three stylized clusters of flowers. Imperfections in the porcelain appear as black dots in the surface of the dish. There are four spots of a green substance, probably paint, adhered to the bottom of the dish. At some time in the past, a large area of the rim broke off and was repaired. There is one smaller chip in the rim.
