DescriptionOctagonal sauce tureen, lid, and tray made of buff-colored earthenware with a blue-tinted glaze, a type of ceramic known as pearlware. Each part is transfer-printed in underglaze cobalt blue with the same pattern, showing two adults and two children on a cliff overlooking a river. Trees line the banks on either side, and there are three small boats in the river. An arched bridge crosses the river, and a large domestic structure is located on the left shore, in the middle distance. The river disappears in the far distance, where small buildings and mountains line the shore.

Sauce Tureen (.a): The octagonal sauce tureen sits on a molded and applied foot, and it has two molded and applied handles in the shape of scrolls. The pattern is printed twice on the outside of the tureen, between the two handles. A narrow border is printed at the foot of the tureen, consisting of concentric blue lines interrupted periodically by white flowers and three oval areas showing a white structure on a hill. Portions of this same border are printed on each handle. A similar border is printed at the outside and inside edges of the rim, consisting of white flowers over concentric blue lines.

Lid (.b): The octagonal lid has a circular molded and applied finial in the center, and a semi-circular area missing from the rim to allow a ladle to rest in the tureen. A very small version of the pattern is printed twice on the top of the lid. A narrow border is printed around the rim of the lid, consisting of concentric blue lines interrupted periodically by white flowers and nine oval areas showing a white structure on a hill. Underglaze blue has been printed on the finial as well. There are a few lines of crazing on the lid, and one spot of light brown discoloration on the rim.

Tray (c): The octagonal tray has two scroll-shaped handles emerging from opposite sides of the rim. The rim dips down, then rises again to form a raised octagonal support for the foot of the tureen. The pattern is printed in the central octagonal area and is surrounded by a border at the rim. The border consists of concentric blue lines interrupted periodically by white flowers and six oval areas showing a white structure on a hill. The same border extends onto the handles. There is crazing over all the surfaces of the tray.
