DescriptionLarge, round, Chinese export porcelain punch bowl with hand-painted underglaze cobalt blue decoration. The outside of the punch bowl is decorated with a border at the foot, a different border at the rim, and floral and animal figures between. The border at the foot consists of a row of solid blue panels, each with white round and rectangular geometric shapes inside. Above this are large, fantastical birds and large flowers. The border at the outside of the rim consists of a row of solid blue, curving, symmetrical scrolls, also with white circles inside. The inside of the punch bowl is decorated on the bottom with a circular floral motif, with a small bird or insect flying above. The inside edge of the rim is also decorated with a border, consisting of delicate scrolls, vines, and leaves, with four evenly spaced flowers interrupting the pattern of vines. Imperfections in the porcelain appear as black dots on the surface of the punch bowl. There is one spot of a white substance, perhaps paint, adhered to the inside edge of the rim.
