DescriptionSmall, ovoid, brown salt-glazed stoneware jug; this is a form known as a "Bartmann" or "Bellarmine" jug. The bellarmine jug has a round, reeded rim, short neck, ovoid body, and a flat bottom. To one side of the jug, a pulled strap handle connects the neck with the shoulder. Opposite the handle, a sprig-molded face of a bearded man wearing a hat is applied to the ceramic. The salt glaze was applied thickly; this resulted in an uneven brown color over some thicker areas of glaze, and a light green tint to the thickest glaze to the right of the handle. The interior of the jug is not glazed. There is crazing over all the glazed surfaces of the jug.
