DescriptionRound, grey, stoneware jug with a salt glaze and cobalt blue decoration. The jug has a cylindrical base, neck, and rim, but a spherical body. The base and neck of the jug are decorated with combed bands, or raised lines. There is a line of cobalt blue decoration following one of these lines at the base and two of these lines at the neck. The rim of the jug is plain. A pulled, strap handle has been applied at the neck and side of the jug. There is pierced hole extending about halfway through the ceramic, on the top of the handle. The primary decoration of a sprigg-molded, oval, armorial medallion is located opposite the handle on the spherical portion of the jug. The medallion consists of a crown over the letters "GR", formed by raised lines and filled in with cobalt blue. Below the "GR" is the head of an angel with outstretched wings. The crown, initials, and angel are surrounded on either side by flowers, leaves, and birds. The entire medallion is surrounded by a raised, patterned oval of stoneware, then a row of incised triangles filled in with cobalt blue. The remainder of the spherical portion of the jug, with the exception of an area around the handle, is decorated with large incised shapes, some abstract, some organic, each filled in with cobalt blue.
There is a hole in the bottom of the jug which leads to a large crack that runs up the side of the jug, to the right of the handle, almost all the way to the rim. There is one small chip in the rim, and three larger chips in the foot.
NotesHistorical Note: According to museum records, this came from the Stiles-Burpee home on Mansion House Road in Southbury, Connecticut.There is a hole in the bottom of the jug which leads to a large crack that runs up the side of the jug, to the right of the handle, almost all the way to the rim.
