DescriptionRound, redware pie plate with slip decoration beneath a lead glaze. The pie plate was formed by trailing white slip over the clay. The slip forms an abstract design consisting of an undulating line around the rim and a jagged line in the center of the pie plate. Then the clay was draped over a mold to give it its shape. The shallow pie plate has a flat bottom surface and sides that expand outward at a forty-five degree angle to form a rolled rim. The base of the pie plate is not completely flat, nor are the sides completely round; the pie plate was mis-shaped after being thrown on the wheel. A lead glaze was applied over the slip-decorated sides of the pie plate only, giving the slip a yellow color and leaving the bottom of the pie plate unglazed. There is light crazing over all the glazed surfaces of the pie plate.
