DescriptionRound redware plate with slip decoration beneath a clear lead glaze. The plate was formed by trailing white slip over the clay to form an undulating line, then the oversize name, "Henry/ Wheele[r]", over an undulating, curly line. Then, the clay was draped over a rounded mold to give it its shape, before tooling the edge with a roulette wheel. The top surface of the plate is glazed, which gives the white slip a yellow appearance; the bottom is left unglazed.

There is considerable crazing on the surface of the plate, and the slip and glaze have flaked off portions of the slip decorations. The glaze has worn away somewhat in the center. There are eight chips in the rim of the plate, in addition to the flakes missing from the decorated portion of the plate.
