DescriptionTwo gallon, wide-mouthed stoneware jar or crock with a salt glaze on the exterior and a brown slip glaze, or Albany type glaze, on the interior. The jar/crock has a flat bottom and cylindrical sides that end in a flat, rolled rim. Two incised lines circle the jar/crock about two inches below the rim. Two pulled lug handles are located on opposite sides, over the incised lines. On one side, between the handles, is an impressed maker's mark, "A. E. Smith [&] SONS/ MANUFACTURERS,/ 33 Peck Slip, N. Y." This is surrounded by a scalloped line. The number "2" is impressed in the jar/crock below the mark. Cobalt blue is applied sparingly to the mark and one handle, and there is a large, hand-painted cobalt blue decoration below the mark. This consists of a flower on a stem with two leaves. In some spots, the cobalt blue was applied thickly; these places have flaked off or bubbled off during the manufacturing process. There is one chip on the outside of the rim. a piece of masking tape is adhered to the outside of the jar/crock to the lower right of the mark. The number "31" is hand-written in pencil on the tape, inside a circle.
