DescriptionWide-mouthed, ovoid, stoneware jar with a salt glaze on the exterior and a brown slip glaze, or Albany-type glaze, on the interior. The jar has a flat foot and sides that swell gently then narrow again to form a plain, standing rim. Below the rim, a band of raised stoneware and an incised line circle the jar. Two pulled lug handles are pressed against the jar along their full length, attaching completely to the jar on opposite sides, over the incised line. To one side, between the handles, is an impressed mark, "SWAN & STATES/ STONINGTON". The word "STONINGTON" is in italics. A small amount of cobalt blue has been applied by hand to the mark and the base of the handles. There are several minor imperfections to the surface of the glaze; the jar itself tilts slightly to one side. Much of the salt glaze is a light brown color, and there is a chip in the rim that occurred prior to glazing in the kiln. The interior and exterior of the top half of the jar are slightly sticky.
