DescriptionShort, ovoid, wide-mouthed, grey stoneware jar with a salt glaze on the exterior and a brown slip glaze, or Albany-type glaze, on the interior. The jar has a round, flat bottom, and sides that gradually widen, then narrow, to form a plain, standing rim. There is one raised line circling the neck of the jar. The jar has two pulled lug handles. The handles are pressed against the jar along their full length, attaching completely to the side of the jar just below the neck. A maker's mark of "D. GOODALE./ HARTFORD" is stamped once, to one side of the jar, between the handles. Cobalt blue has been applied over the mark, and at the base of each of the handles. The glaze on the exterior of the jar has some imperfections and is not uniformly grey. Opposite the mark, the glaze takes on a light brown tint, and a yellow tinted glaze drips down from the rim. Dirt has adhered to projecting portions of the exterior glaze.
Two paper labels are applied to the outside of the jar. The first, located to the left of the mark, is a small, white, oval, paper label with the number "12197" hand-written in pencil. The second paper label is larger and square, with a border surrounding the printed words, "George S. McKearin/ Collection/ of/ American Pottery/ No. 1229". The number is hand-written.
