DescriptionOvoid, wide-mouthed, grey stoneware jar with a salt glaze on the exterior and a brown sip glaze, or Albany-type glaze, on the interior. The jar has a flat bottom and sides that swell gently then narrow to form a plain, standing rim. A band of raised and incised lines circles the jar about an inch below the rim. Two pulled lug handles are applied over these lines on opposite sides of the jar. Between the handles, on one side, is an impressed mark, "SWAN & STATES/ STONINGTON." (The word "STONINGTON" is in italics.) Cobalt blue has been applied over the mark and at the base of each of the handles. There are several minor imperfections in the glaze and surface of the stoneware, including a small hole over the mark. There is one crack in the jar to the right of one of the handles, that runs from the rim about halfway down the side of the jar. An unknown light green substance has adhered to the jar at the base, to the lower left of the mark.
