DescriptionLarge, ovoid, grey stoneware jug with cobalt blue decoration. The jug has a round base and sides that gently swell, then narrow quickly at the neck to form a lightly reeded rim. To one side, a pulled strap handle connects the rim and the shoulder of the jug. Opposite the handle is an impressed maker's stamp, "G. BENTON/ &/ L.STEWART/ HARTFORD". Hand-painted cobalt blue has been applied to the maker's stamp, and both ends of the handle. The jug has a brown slip glaze, or Albany-type glaze, on the interior, a grey salt glaze on the exterior, and a light brown glaze at the neck, rim, and handle. There is some irregularity in the glaze, especially where the glaze changes from brown to gray at the neck, and elsewhere on the jug. The numbers "14" and later a "9" or "4" have been scratched into the ceramic and brown glaze to the left of the handle. There are two short cracks on the side near the base of the jug, and a sticky substance is adhered to the jug to the lower right of the handle.
