DescriptionCircular stoneware spittoon with a dark brown slip glaze, or Albany-type glaze, on the exterior. The spittoon has a circular, flat foot and inwardly-curved sides divided into nine panels. Each panel has an abstract, raised, curved leaf. At one side, where two of the panels meet, is an inverted triangular hole. The nine panels each flare out to form a circular rim. The top of the rim is flat, and about one inch wide, with eight raised clusters of grapes evenly spaced around the rim. Inside this rim, the spittoon tapers down several inches, descending down to a circular opening in the center.
There are three small chips in the glaze on the conical section of the spittoon. There are two white paper labels adhered to the rim. The first is typed with the words, "impressed mark/ Sidney Risley/ Norwich/ Conn. (1836-75) bc/ [sic] rare". Following this, "$18" is hand-written in the lower right corner. The second paper label is located on the opposite side of the rim, and is hand-written, "MARKED/ RISLEY/ NORWICH".
