DescriptionSquare, tin-glazed earthenware tile with hand-painted cobalt blue decoration. The decoration consists of a bird sitting on a branch, or trunk of a tree, that sticks out of the ground at a forty-five degree angle. Small, three-part embellishments are located in each of the four corners. The lower right corner of the tile has been entirely replaced using a tan putty-like substance, and repainted to mimick the decoration in the remaining three corners. There are several scratches on the surface of the tile, and small chips along the edges, especially at the upper right corner.

NotesHistorical Note: This tile was originally installed in the John Lawrence House in Hartford, Connecticut. Captain John Lawrence (1719-1802) was the Treasurer of Connecticut from 1769 to 1789. He was a member of the Lawrence family of Hartford, Connecticut. His house was built between 1783 and 1874. (Hunt 11/30/2004)
