DescriptionSmall, square, ornamental porcelain vase with a handle. The vase has a flat, square foot, and sides that narrow and then widen to an oval rim. The slip-cast form has raised decorations along the edges, as well as raised scrolls and beads at the rim. Only one side of the vase and handle have any applied decoration, and that consists primarily of gilding. The gilding surrounds a white area that is outlined in raised beads. These in turn surround an oval scene titled, "NEW BRIDGE, HARTFORD, CONN." at the bottom. The scene shows a stone block arched bridge with a railing, over blue water and under a blue and peach sky.

The inside and undecorated side of the vase reveal that the quality of the porcelain is not the best, as there are many raised bumps and colored spots. The undecorated side also has the remnants of residue from a sticker, now appearing as two black, parallel lines. There is a small area of an unknown yellow substance, perhaps the remnants of a sticker, adhered to the inside, just under the rim. Some of the gilding has worn off the raised decoration at the handle and the rim.
NotesHistorical Note: The neo-classical "New Bridge", pictured on this vase is now known as the Bulkeley Bridge. It was built between 1903 and 1908. Today it supports Interstate 84 as it crosses the Connecticut River at Hartford, Connecticut. The granite bridge has nine arches and is 1,192 feet long.
