DescriptionRound, porcelain teapot with hand-painted pink luster decoration. The teapot is part of a partial tea service consisting of a teapot (.1a,b), lidded sugar bowl (.2a,b), cream pitcher (.3), eleven teacups (.4a-.14a), eleven saucers (.4b-.14b), and two dishes (.15-.16). The primary decoration on this partial set consists of a band of hand-painted decoration between two lines of pink luster. The decoration consists of evenly-spaced, long, triangular shapes with a scalloped edge. Between these are abstract, long, slender leaves and branches, with occasional clusters of three small dots of red enamel, probably representing berries.
Teapot (.1a): The teapot has a round foot with an irregular, scrolled edge, swelled sides, and a neck that narrows then flares again to form the rim. The sides of the teapot are ribbed, and the hand-painted pink luster decoration is applied in a band around the widest portion of the teapot. There is additional pink luster decoration at the rim, consisting of two straight lines with an irregular line, immitating a vine or leaves, between. The teapot also has a molded and applied handle, with a feathered edge at the highest point of the handle. The feathered edge has been hand-painted with pink luster, in addition to a line of pink luster running down the handle. The handle and spout, found opposite each other, were applied over two mold lines. The spout has a line of pink luster at the rim, and an irregular line running down each side, that imitates a vine or leaves. The entire teapot has discolored unevenly, and there is crazing on all surfaces.
Lid (.1b): The circular, domed, ribbed lid has the same band of pink luster decoration applied to the sides above the rim. There is a small hole in the ceramic. The lid has a finial in the shape of a flower and highlighted with pink luster. Only the outer edges of the rim are discolored.
