DescriptionRound, porcelain cake plate with gilding and overglaze enamels in purple, yellow, green, and black. The cake plate has a lightly scalloped edge and raised shell decoration on the rim. There is additional raised decoration in the form of flowers, leaves, and scrolls where the raised shell decoration ends. Additionally, the plate has two round, interior handles located on opposite sides of the rim. There are raised scrolls surrounding these handles, which have been decorated with gilding. The rim has been decorated with small transfer-printed groups of delicate yellow and purple flowers on stems with green leaves. The primary decoration on the cake plate consists of a black enamel transfer-printed design showing the "CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH, STAFFORD SPRINGS, CONN." The oval design shows a stone structure with pointed arch windows, a tower, and a tall hipped roof. The building is surrounded by leafless trees on either side, and there is a sidewalk out in front. Above and slightly to the left of the church is a small brown dot, probably an imperfection in the ceramic or glaze. The highest raised decorations have accumulated some dirt, and some gilding has worn off the decoration around the handles.
