DescriptionTrivet consisting of a square earthenware tile with three, small, green felt circles glued to the back of the tile. These would have prevented the tile from scratching the surface it rested on or from transferring heat from a hot pot placed on the trivet to the surface below. The trivet has a brown transfer-printed pattern and a title in the lower right corner: "LAND ALLOTMENTS/ 1665-1667/ HOMENOSCITT PLANTATION/ CLINTON, CONN." The central design shows the rectangular plots of land assigned on either side of a river, labeled "INDIAN RIVER". The plots are labeled with various names and designations: "Wm. Hayden", "E. Griswold", "Eleazer Isbel", Josiah Hull", "Wm. Stevens", "Geo. Saunders", Sam'l Buell", "James Westover", "J. Elderkin", "Burying Ground", "Parsonage", "Dan'l Clark", "J. Dunnen", "Wm. Kelsey", "Common", "J. Rossiter", "Mathew Allen", "Henry Crane", "John Hodge", "John Netterson", "Robert Williams", "Thos. Smith", "Wm. Barber", "John Meigs", "Wm. Kelsey", "Rev. Woodbridge", "B. Rossiter", "H. Farnham", "Wm. Wellman", "G. Chatfield", "Thos. Stevens", "John Kelsey". Three roads cross the land allotments, each labeled "TO HARTFORD", "LONG HILL", and "TO SAYBROOK" respectively. The plots and roads are surrounded by horizontal lines and little tick marks, probably representing a marsh surrounding the town. There is a boat and three seagulls depicted in the lower left corner of the trivet. A marker labeled "25/ NH/ MILESTONE" fills the top center of the trivet, and a compass, in the shape of a life raft, labeled "N/ E/ S/ W" with a boat in the center, is in the upper right corner.
