DescriptionU.S. Marine Corps Captain's dress uniform from World War II, worn by Captain Peter Van Cortlandt Stoughton.
Jacket: This green officer's jacket has two breast patch pockets (7 1/2 x 5 1/2 inch), two hip patch pockets (11 1/4 x 12 inch) and two epaulets at the shoulders (5 3/4 x 2 1/2 inch), all of which fasten with 5/8-inch dark brown plastic buttons. All of the buttons on the jacket depict an eagle, anchor, and stars. The jacket is single breasted and has three one-inch and one 3/4-inch buttons at the center front. The 3/4-inch button is the only plain plastic button (no eagle), and appears to be a replacement. The two-pieced, notched collar has decorative pins attached to it. There is one metal pin on each side of the collar with a raised globe, anchor, and eagle. The long (25-inch) sleeves have self-fabric applied to the cuff area, forming an inverted "V", pointing towards the shoulder. The narrowest point of this applied fabric measures three inches, while the widest (at the point) is six inches. On the left sleeve, 2 1/2 inches from the armscye, there is a red diamond shaped patch, 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 inch, with four inches of yellow embroidery. A 36 x 2 inch self-fabric belt is held to the jacket with two self-fabric loops at the sides and two metal hooks at the back waistline. A 1 1/4 x 2 1/8 inch gold metal buckle fastens the belt.

The interior of the jacket is fully lined with matching green silk fabric. The front of the jacket is quilted to the waistline. There is a pocket on the front right side of the jacket at the breastline. The shoulders are padded. The sleeves are lined with a purple and blue striped white plain-woven cotton.

Jodpurs: These jodpurs match the jacket in fabrication. The inner legs are padded by the addition of self-fabric on the exterior of the pant legs. This padding begins 16 1/2 inches from the hem and ends 5 1/4 inches from it. The outer legs have 8 3/4 inch metal zippers running up from the hems along the side seams. Another metal zipper, nine inches long, is found extending down from the waistband at the center front. The waistband is 2 1/4-inches wide. Seven self-fabric belt loops occur around the waistband, four at the front and three at the back. There are two 6 1/2-inch pockets at the side seams. There are two 5 1/2-inch wide pockets on the back of the jodpurs, 3 1/2 inches down from the waistband. The back left pocket has one 3/8-inch green plastic button clusure, whereas the right pocket does not. The center back of the waistband has a one-inch notch.
The interior of the jodpurs are only lined at the waistband with a white plain-woven cotton fabric. The interior of the pockets are all constructed with the same fabric. Along the waistband, ther are eight buttons; two occur at the front, two on the sides, and two at the back. The remaining two bottons are on the left side of the waistband. They help to secure the front of the closed. All of these buttons are off-white plastic.

Hat: This hat is constructed from the same green fabric as the other parts of the uniform. The crown is round and flat. At the center of the crown, there is flat green braiding, organized in a decorative pattern that covers an area of 6 3/4 x 6 1/4 inches. A 1 3/4 x 1 1/2 inch metal pin depicts a globe, eagle, and anchor, and is placed at the center front of the hat. Above the brim, there is a length of green cotton knit fabric applied to the base fabric to create a band. Additionally, there is a 12 1/2 x 3/4 inch piece of leather placed on top of the band and secured to the hat with a brown plastic pin (also decorated with the eagle and anchor) at each end. At its widest points, the brim measures 2 3/8 x 8 inches.

The underside of the head band is lined in a 1 3/8-inch wide strip of light brown leather. The crown appears to be lined in a woven silk/synthetic. An oval shaped piece of off-white leather is applied to the interior of the crown, attaching at the center front and center back. In the center of this piece, as well as underneath it, the maker has printed: "Tailored by Lewis". Above this writing is a crest and two lions.

Pants: These long pants match the rest of the uniform in fabrication but are slightly darker in color. The legs of the pants are creased. A 9 1/2-inch metal zipper is at the center front, extending downward from the 1 3/4-inch wide waistband. There are two belt loops on the front of the pants and four at the back, all of which measure 2 1/4 x 1/2 inches. There are two in seam pockets at each side. The two welt pockets at the back (5 1/2-inches long) are found on each side, 3 1/2 inches down from the waistband. A one-inch notch is found at the center back of the waistband. On the interior of the pants, only the waistband is lined with off-white plain-woven cotton fabric. This same fabric is used for all pocket linings. There are eight off-white plastic buttons sewn on the interior of the waistband; two at the front, two at the back, and two at the sides, all measuring 5/8-inch. The remaining two buttons are found at the front left side of the pants and are used to secure the pants closed.
