DescriptionOval, buff-colored earthenware sauce tureen with a blue-tinted glaze, a type of ceramic known as pearlware. The sauce tureen (.a) sits on a wide foot, and has swelled sides and a wide rim with an undulating edge. In addition, there are two molded handles, shaped like 'C' scrolls, applied to either end of the tureen. The rim of the domed lid (.b) is shaped to fit into the undulating rim, and there is a small semi-circular cut-out to accommodate a spoon. A molded finial in the shape of a flower was applied to the middle of the lid. The sauce tureen and lid are decorated with an underglaze cobalt blue transfer-printed pattern and design. Printed on both sides, the pattern consists of an oval lacy border containing the word "CONNECTICUT" above. Inside the border, an elaborate scrolled cartouche with three groups of clouds inside sits on a pile of ammunition and cannons. Clouds fill the sky above the seal inside the oval. Outside the oval, the border consists of trumpet flowers and vines on a field of dark blue. The edge of the foot, inside and outside edge of the rim on the sauce tureen, and the rim on the lid, are decorated with a series of scalloped reeds interrupted periodically with circles or wheels. The lid is also decorated with the border of flowers and vines on a field of dark blue, surrounding a portion of the pattern. The handles are all painted a dark blue.
A label affixed to the inside of the lid indicates that the lid has undergone previous restoration. This is visible along the rim, where two restored portions of the lid's rim are now yellow. There are only a few lines of crazing on the bottom of the sauce tureen.
