DescriptionRound, ironstone plate with a printed green underglaze border with a printed overglaze black enamel pattern and hand-painted brown, green, and blue enamels. The circular pattern in the center of the plate is titled, "HISTORICAL CHARTER OAK./ CONECTICUT CHARTER CONCEALED IN TREE, A.D. 1687-1689./ TREE BLOWN DOWN AUG 31ST 1856". The pattern shows a large tree, leaning to the left, behind a fenced-in lawn. A white house sits at the far end of the yard. The outlines for the pattern are printed in black enamel over the glaze. However, brown, green, and blue enamels have been hand-painted on to color in the sky, yard, trees, and fence. This is surrounded by a green, printed, underglaze border of five large flowers, evenly spaced around the rim, with scrolls, flowers, and leaves between. There is a spot of blue enamel on the rim above the house, and light scratches in the hand-painted enamels.
NotesHistorical Note: The Wyllys Mansion was built in 1636 by Governor George Wyllys (1710-1796). The site of the mansion is also where the Charter Oak stood. After remaining in the Wyllys family for four generations, the mansion was purchased by Stephen Bulkeley (1768-1841); by 1834 he tore it down and replaced it with a Federalist style home.Status
