DescriptionRound, ironstone plate with underglaze cobalt blue transfer-printed borders and a pattern titled, "Trinity College, Hartford, Conn." The circular pattern printed in the center of the plate shows a series of brick buildings with towers, dormer windows, and gable roofs, all in the Gothic revival style. The buildings are set back behind a grassy lawn lined with trees. The pattern is surrounded by a border at the rim, with various large flowers and leaves on a field of light blue. A narrow border at the outer edge of the rim consists of a scalloped white line and a series of blue circles creating a geometric pattern. There is light crazing over some of the top surface of the plate. There are several areas of a yellow substance adhered to the bottom of the plate.
NotesSubject Note: Trinity College moved to its present location on Summit Street in Hartford in 1878. The Trustees chose William Burges, the distinguished English architect, to design the new campus. Financial and other considerations made it impossible to implement most of Burges' plan, but Jarvis and Seabury Halls (completed in 1878) and Northam Towers (1881) bear his distinctive stamp. These portions of the new campus, together with the imposing Gothic chapel completed in 1932, are generally viewed as the earliest examples of "collegiate Gothic" in the United States.
