DescriptionRound, ironstone plate with a underglaze cobalt blue transfer-printed borders and a pattern titled, "The Athenaeum Building Hartford Conn" on the back. The pattern, printed in the center of the plate, is a front view of a two-story, stone building with Gothic pointed arches over the entryway, two towers, and a crenellated roofline. The building is set back across a small lawn, with a tree, sidewalk, and roadway in the foreground. The pattern is surrounded by a border at the rim, with various large flowers and leaves on a field of light blue. A narrow border at the outer edge of the rim consists of a scalloped white line and a series of blue circles creating a geometric pattern. There is light crazing over all the surfaces of the plate.
NotesSubject Note: The building pictured is the original Gothic-revival Wadsworth Atheneum building (1842-1844) at 600 Main Street, Hartford, Connecticut. The Wadsworth Atheneum is America's oldest public art museum, established in 1842 and opened in 1844, preceding the founding of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The museum is named for its founder, the arts patron and philanthropist Daniel Wadsworth (1771-1848), and after the Athenaeum in Rome (itself named for Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom).
