DescriptionA nearly-square porcelain bowl with underglaze cobalt blue decoration and overglaze red enamel and gilding. The rim of the bowl is highest at each indented corner and dips down in the center of each side. Both the inside and outside of the rim are decorated with a pattern of alternating blue squares with gilding and red enamel in floral or abstract geometric shapes. Each blue square is separated by a small area of white and diagonal lines of gilding. The inside of the bowl is separated into eight panels around a central round area, in which underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze red enamel, and gilding form a flower. The eight panels alternate between one of two decorations. The first is a solid blue panel with three white areas of red enamel in the shape of a flower; the blue panels are also decorated with gilt scrolls. The second group of panels are decorated with sprigs of flowers. Each of the four exterior sides of the bowl are decorated with similar springs of flowers. Two lines of gilding and a line of underglaze cobalt blue decorate the foot of the bowl.

The bowl has an old hairline crack running from the bottom of the bowl through to the rim. At some point in the past it was repaired using two metal staples, found on the inside of the bowl. Some of the gilding has worn off the rim of the bowl.
