DescriptionRound, Chinese export porcelain milk pot with hand-painted overglaze black enamel and gilding, a technique of decorating ceramics known as grisaille. The milk pot has a narrow foot that swells to a round form in the body, then narrows again at the neck before forming a spout. A handle, consisting of two strands of extruded porcelain that are twisted together, has been applied opposite the spout. Four clusters of abstract floral decorations have been applied where the handle meets the body of the milk pot. These have been decorated with black enamel. The foot is decorated with a line of black enamel arrows. The side of the milk pot, opposite the handle, is decorated with a cluster of flowers in black enamel with gilt highlights. The rim of the milk pot has a border of gilding and black enamel in abstract geometric shapes and straight lines. The glaze on the inside top of the rim was removed at the time of manufacture, perhaps to accommodate a lid. Dirt has accumulated on several exterior spots of the milk pot.
