DescriptionRound, earthenware plate with a transfer-printed underglaze cobalt blue decoration. The transfer-printed design was printed in a dark blue then made to run in the kiln, a type of ceramic known as flow blue. The small printed pattern in the center of the plate shows two figures standing in front of a body of water. A large structure, or castle, sits on the hill at the far shore. A tree to the right frames the landscape. This pattern is surrounded by an area of white, then a border at the rim. The border consists of three areas divided by double scrolls, leaves, and foliage. Each area contains the same pattern, showing a castle on a lake with a horse or carriage in the foreground. There is crazing over all the surfaces of the platter, and a small chip at an edge of the rim over the border. There are an additional four small chips on the bottom of the rim, plus a small area of loss on the bottom of the rim. Some of the crazing on the bottom of the rim has acquired a build-up of dirt.
