DescriptionRound, white, ironstone plate with a transfer-printed underglaze cobalt blue pattern. The plate has a circular, flat foot and a deeply flaring rim. The plate is decorated with scenes from Yale University, beginning with an image in the center of the plate, titled above "SOUVENIR OF YALE" and below "OLD BRICK ROW". This image shows a group of four-story buildings, one of which has a tower at one corner. The row of buildings is behind a group of leafless trees growing in an area surrounded by a fence. This scene is surrounded by a narrow border of semi-circles and triangles on a dark blue field. Above the scene is a circular seal with an open book superimposed over a shield in the center. Unknown words are printed in Hebrew on the book, while the Latin words "LUX ET VERITAS" surround the shield. The shield and words are surrounded by a white border with the words "SIGILL : COLL : YALEN : NOV : PORT : NOV : ANGL :". The deep rim on the plate is decorated with six different oval scenes, each showing a different building from the Yale University campus. First is a three-story building with a flat roof, titled "YALE LAW SCHOOL", then a rambling structure with a tower titled "SCIENTIFIC SCHOOL". Next is a domed building titled "BI-CENTENNIAL BUILDING", then a 'U'-shaped four-story building surrounding a tree in a courtyard titled "VANDERBILT HALL". Finally, a tall building over an arched doorway is titled "PHELPS HALL" and a three-story building with four arches before the main doorway is titled "OSBORN HALL". Surrounding these scenes, at the edge of the rim, is a border of semi-circles with leaves inside on a dark blue field.
