DescriptionLarge, rectangular, ironstone platter with a transfer-printed, underglaze, brown pattern and border. The pattern, printed in the center of the platter, is titled, "The Bosphorus" as indicated in a mark on the bottom of the platter. The pattern shows a stone terrace in the left foreground, with steps leading down to a river. A woman is standing on the terrace, and a guitar and sheets of music are resting on the ground at the base of an urn to the left. A man in loose pants that end just above the knee is standing on the steps leading to the terrace; he is gazing to the left at the woman. A gondola, with a gentleman to propel the boat, is in the water in the right foreground, near the stone terrace. On the far shore is an elaborate gazebo, or mausoleum, with a domed roof and Gothic-style windows. Additional buildings and monuments are located on the shore in the distance, as are several tall mountains in the far distance. The pattern is surrounded by an undecorated area, then an elborate border at the rim. The border consists of a group of three flowers and leaves, alternating with large sheaves of wheat. This is surrounded by a scalloped line, then a final line of triangles decorates the outer edge of the rim. There are a few light scratches on the top surface of the platter, and additional scratches along the bottom.
NotesHistorical Note: The home of Martha Ruhamah Tryon Lambert (1892-1979) was located at 712 Main Street in South Glastonbury, Connecticut.
