DescriptionGroup of five plates, four made of ironstone (.973, .975-.977) and one made of buff-colored earthenware with a blue-tinted glaze (.974), a type of ceramic known as pearlware. Each plate is decorated with a fringe of underglaze cobalt blue hand-painted at the rim of the plate. Four of the plates (.973-.976) have impressed lines at the rim of the plate. While the plates are all similar, only plates .973 and .974 have the same impressed lines. Each plate has stilt marks on both the top and bottom surface.
Plate .973 has overall crazing and severe, but uneven, brown discoloration on all surfaces. As a result of the crazing, the glaze has flaked off a few small spots on the top surface of the plate. Plate .974 has overall crazing and light scratches, with a grey discoloration in the center of the plate. Many of the scratches have accumulated dirt, especially along the inside edge of the rim. Plate .975 has overall crazing and light brown and black discoloration on all surfaces. Plate .976 has overall crazing and light brown discoloration along the crazing and at several spots around the rim of the plate. There is a crack crossing the foot of the plate, which is also surrounded by a light brown discoloration. Plate .977 has several brown dots on each side of the plate, each associated with a break in the glaze. There are many light scratches on each side of the plate, especially around the foot.
