DescriptionViews of towns along the Housatonic and Naugatuck Rivers, including Derby, Shelton, Ansonia, and Stevenson. Some views include houses, commercial buildings, and industrial buildings. Specific structures include F. Hallock & Co. Hardware, the Birmingham Iron Foundry, the Derby Lumber Co., the Derby Trucking Co., the First Congregational Church in Derby, and the birthplace of Isaac Hull in Shelton. Other views include trolley tracks, railroad tracks, and the Derby railroad station. Bridges include the Concrete Bridge in Derby and a railroad bridge. Some photographs show floods and an ice jam during a spring freshet. Dams include the Ousatonic Dam, which is shown undergoing repairs. There are two views of Indian Well, a waterfall in Shelton.
NotesDate Note: The Ousatonic Dam between Derby and Shelton washed out in 1891, when a cold snap followed by a thaw forced huge slabs of ice and flood water into the dam; it was rebuilt the same year. This is probably the date of the ice jam, flood, and dam repairs depicted in these photographs. (Finlay 7/21/2004)
