DescriptionThin, completely hollow, mold-blown opal glass vase. The vase has a flat cut and polished lip, a trumpet-shaped neck over a compressed half-sphere, a stem with a ring in the middle, and a double curved foot with a smooth, flat bottom. There is gilding or remnants of gilding at the rim, the bottom of the trumpet neck, the bottom of the compressed half-sphere, the ring on the stem, and on the first of the two double curves at the foot. Additional gilded decoration is applied on the trumpet neck in the shape of oval cartouches with sprays of flowers inside, flanked by small flowers and leaves. A double, scalloped line of gilding with small leaves circles the compressed half-sphere. Small gilded flowers and leaves are located around the foot. Much of the gilding is worn off, especially on the lower half, and there is a pattern of wear and small scratches circling the bottom of the vase.
NotesSubject Note: Opal and opaque white glass objects were often made to imitate the fine, translucent porcelains being made in China for export to Europe and America. (Hunt 3/10/2005)Status
