DescriptionRound, scalloped-edged, Chinese export porcelain dish (.1) with hand-painted underglaze cobalt blue decoration and overglaze gilding; the dish is a type of Chinese export porcelain known as Cantonware. The hand-painted Chinese landscape consists of a willow tree and Chinese structure to the right. A river with a Chinese junk runs through the landscape, with a bridge in the foreground and houses, hills, and mountains in the distance. The central landscape is surrounded by concentric borders. The first is a band of blue with darker lines creating a diamond pattern inside. This border is surrounded by a field of white and then a "Canton" border, consisting of a scalloped line with parallel lines of hatching running inside. The "Canton" border is surrounded by a line of gilding then a blue border, with darker lines creating a diamond pattern, along the scalloped rim of the dish. The rim of the dish is gilded. The sides of the dish are ribbed, and the outside is decorated with three stylized clusters of flowers. Imperfections in the porcelain appear as black dots on the surface.
