DescriptionRound, Chinese export porcelain teapot with straight spout and handle decorated with hand-painted overglaze enamels in green, pink, purple, brown, blue, and black. The straight sides of the teapot reflect the neoclassical style popular in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
The teapot (.a) has an enameled cluster of flowers on either side. There is a border at the foot consisting of a wavy line of brown enamel with a purple enamel dot in each depression of the line. There are also two borders at the rim of the teapot; one is a solid purple enamel line, and the other is a line of swagging in brown enamel. The handle consists of two pieces of extruded porcelain that were twisted together and applied to the body of the teapot. Four molded and applied clusters of decoration, painted in orange enamel, are found where the handle once joined the body of the teapot.
The round lid (.b) has a molded and applied finial with gilding and brown enamel in the center. This is surrounded by three borders, the first being a wavy brown enamel line with a purple enamel dot in each depression of the line. The next border is a line of swagging in brown enamel, and the third border is a solid line of purple enamel at the rim. There is a small hole in the lid, presumably to let out steam from the teapot. The teapot has the remnants of gilding visible on the end of the spout, on the rim and handle of the teapot, and on the finial on the lid.
