DescriptionRectangular Chinese export porcelain soup tureen and lid hand-painted in underglaze cobalt blue with a Chinese landscape; the soup tureen is a type of Chinese export porcelain known as Cantonware. The landscape consists of a willow tree and Chinese strcture to the right. A river with a Chinese junk runs through the landscape, with a bridge in the foreground and houses, hills, and mountains in the distance. Imperfections in the porcelain appear as black dots and gouges on the tureen and lid.
Tureen (.a): The landscape appears on the outside of the two longer sides of the tureen. The foot of the tureen has a border of underglaze cobalt blue with darker lines creating a diamond pattern inside. Two molded handles in the shape of boars' heads have been applied to the ends of the tureen.
Lid (.b): The landscape appears on the top of the lid, with a molded and applied finial in the middle. The landscape is then surrounded by a field of white and then a "Canton" border, consisting of a scalloped line with parallel lines of hatching running inside, and then a band of blue with darker lines creating a diamond pattern inside. There is a small crack near the inside rim of the lid which appears to be stable. The lower left side of the lid has an accretion of an unknown substance.
