DescriptionRectangular Chinese export porcelain sauce tureen with lid and tray, hand-painted in underglaze cobalt blue with a Chinese landscape; the tureen and tray are a type of Chinese export known as Cantonware. The landscape consists of a willow tree in a landscape with a Chinese structure to the right. A Chinese junk floats on a river that runs through the landscape, with a bridge in the foreground and mountains, houses, and treese in the distance. Imperfections in the porcelain appear as black dots and gouges in the surface of the tureen, lid, and tray.

Tureen (.a): The landscape can be found on both sides of the tureen. Each end of the sauce tureen has a molded and applied handle in the shape of a boar's head. The underglaze cobalt on the body of the tureen has a hazy appearance compared with most Cantonware.

Lid (.b): The landscape is centrally located on the top of the lid and is surrounded by a series of borders. The first is a field of white, followed by a "Canton" border, consisting of a scalloped line with parallel lines of hatching running inside. This is followed by a field of blue with darker lines creating a diamond pattern inside. The lid has a molded and applied finial in the center.

Tray (.c): The landscape is located in the center of the tray and is surrounded by a series of borders. The first, closest to the landscape, is a band of blue with darker lines creating a diamond pattern inside. This is followed by a field of white then a border in the "Canton" pattern. Finally, at the edge of the rim, is another band of blue with darker lines creating a diamond pattern inside.
