DescriptionGroup of ten small, round, Chinese export porcelain plates with overglaze hand-painted orange enamel decoration in the Fitzhugh pattern. The Fitzhugh pattern consists of four groups of flowers and emblems, or geometric shapes, evenly spaced around a central circular medallion. This central medallion is a circular floral arrangement surrounded by a border consisting of a band of orange with darker lines creating a latticework, or diaper, pattern inside. At four points, this border is interrupted by an area of solid orange enamel with a small white animal (possibly a dog). This is surrounded by a "Nanking" border, consisting of a series of lines that alternate between having an orange dot at either end or having an arrow pointing toward the central panel. The Fitzhugh pattern appears in the center of each plate and is surrounded by two borders. The first is a band of orange enamel with darker orange lines superimposed to create heptagons with a dot in the center. At the rim of each plate is an elaborate border composed of geometric shapes, insects, and flowers. Imperfections in the porcelain appear as black dots or lines on the surface of the plates.

Plates .41 to .43 are in good condition. There is a small crack in the rim of plate .44. There is one small chip in each of the rims of plates .45 to .47. One area of enamel on the rim of plate .46 has faded or worn. Plate .48 has two chips in the rim, and plate .49 has one chip in the rim. An area of ceramic has broken off of plate .50. Plate .50 also has an unknown yellow substance adhered to the underside of the rim around the break, probably the result of previous conservation work.
