DescriptionGroup of four rectangular, Chinese export porcelain lidded vegetable dishes with overglaze hand-painted orange enamel decoration in the Fitzhugh pattern. The Fitzhugh pattern consists of four groups of flowers and emblems, or geometric shapes, evenly spaced around a central circlar medallion. This central medallion is a circular floral arrangement surrounded by a border consisting of a band of orange with darker lines creating a latticework, or diaper, pattern inside. At four points, this border is interrupted by an area of white with a small orange animal (possibly a dog). This is surrounded by a "Nanking" border, consisting of a series of lines that alternate between having an orange dot at either end or having an arrow pointing toward the central panel. Imperfections in the porcelain appear as black dots or lines in the surface of the ceramic.

Vegetable Dishes (.a): The Fitzhugh pattern is hand-painted on the inside bottom of each vegetable dish. This is surrounded by an elaborate border composed of geometric shapes, insects, and flowers on a field of orange enamel. The rim of each dish is decorated with gilding. A group of flowers is hand-painted on each exterior side of each vegetable dish.

Lids (.b): Each vegetable dish has a rectangular lid, with a gilded finial in the center of an oval, organic shape. This is surrounded by a variation of the Fitzhugh pattern, where two panels of flowers surround a central medallion that appears on each side of the top of the lid. Finally, an elaborate border is hand-painted at the rim of the lid, composed of geometric shapes, insects, and flowers on a field of orange enamel.

Vegetable dish .4a has a chip in the foot, just over an imperfection in the porcelain. There is a build up of dirt along the inside rim of the foot at one corner. The enamel on the rim of the lid (.4b) is smudged in two places. Vegetable dish .5a has slight wear to the gilding on the rim, and one spot of worn enamel on the rim of the lid (.5b). Additionally, there is one spot on the top surface of the lid where the glaze and enamel is marred; this probably occurred at the time of manufacture. Vegetable dish .6a has slight wear to the gilding on the rim and on the finial of the lid (.6b). There are two spots of smudged enamel on the rim of the lid. Additionally, there is one spot on the top surface of the lid where the glaze and enamel is marred; this probably occurred at the time of manufacture. Vegetable dish .7a has light wear to the gilding on the rim and a few small chips in the foot. There is a light yellow discoloration on the inside surface of the lid (.7b).
