DescriptionMaple side chair in the Queen Anne, or late baroque, style, with a yoke-shaped crest rail, a splat-back, turned stiles, legs, and stretchers, and a rush seat. The back of the chair is formed by a yoke-shaped crest rail atop two turned stiles. The center of the crest rail is arched; each side has an ear that is fluted and curved to the side. Centered below the crest rail is a solid, vase-shaped splat, which attaches at the bottom to the stay rail. Above the seat, each stile is turned with ring and baluster forms. Below the seat, each stile forms a cylindrical back leg with a tapered foot. Each front leg is turned with three cylindrical sections, each separated by a ring, over an ovoid foot. Each front leg has a flattened top that extends slightly higher than the rush seat, which is trapezoidal in shape. Each of the two front stretchers are turned with six cylindrical forms. Each side has two plain turned stretchers; the back has one plain turned stretcher.

Condition: The frame has been disassembled; the splat is probably inverted. The frame is refinished, and the rush is replaced.

Design and Construction Details: The crest rail is supported by tenons at the top of each stile; each of these joints is secured with a wooden pin. The splat is tenoned into the crest rail above and into the stay rail below. The edges of the back side of the splat are chamfered sharply. The stay rail is tenoned to each stile. Each seat rail is bladelike, with a rounded outer edge and a tapered inner edge. The seat rails are tenoned into the stiles at the back, and into the legs at the front. The stretchers are tenoned into the front or back legs. Faint grooves circling the stiles and front legs mark the placement of the stay rail, seat rails, and stretchers.
