DescriptionTied comforter consisting of a red copperplate-printed plain-woven cotton top, or toile de Jouy, thick batting, and a red cylinder-printed, plain-woven, cotton backing; these three layers are joined by small yarn knots at regular intervals through the comforter as well as hand-stitching at the edges. The top includes a center panel of red copperplate-printed plain-woven chintz with a Chinoiserie design of pagodas, fountains, exotic birds, trees and people. This is flanked by a panel of cotton printed in red and pink with small "x"s on a grid. The backing is plain-woven cotton printed in red with small, dense, leaves on curving vines.

The copperplate-printed portions of the top are pieced together from several blocks of chintz; this fabric pre-dates the comforter and was probably re-used. The backing is constructed of four panels of red printed plain-woven cotton; one of the four panels is the same material used at each side of the top of the comforter.

Condition: The copperplate-printed fabric is stained and has a few repaired holes. Both flanking panels are heavily stained. The backing is stained and faded as well.
