DescriptionA large group of tents is pitched in a grove of trees. Some tents have initials over their doors: "W.H." "4 St." "E.S." "M.M." "B.S." "C.M." "E.T." "F.M." One tent has a pennant flying from its ridgepole with the word "BETHEL" inscribed on it. A man is giving a lecture or sermon from a wooden platform in the right foreground. Additional men are seated behind him on the platform. A wooden ladder leans against the left side. The audience is seated in rows of chairs on the ground facing the speaker. The women are seated on the left, the men on the right. The women wear dresses and bonnets. Some wear shawls. Some hold fans. Some women appear to be weeping. Additional men, women, and children stand or sit at the entrances to the tents. Two men, a woman, and a small boy are seated on a bench in the foreground. Two men lean against a tree. In the left foreground, a woman stands beside a small campfire. A kettle hangs from a spit supported on two forked branches. An open box and a plate or dish are at the far left. A man wearing a top hat, a coat, and checked trousers stands nearby. Additional trees and a horse-drawn carriage are in the distance.
