DescriptionIn the foreground is a rail fence on top of a stone wall bordering a road. In the road is a man leading an oxcart, followed by a man in a suit and hat and two women walking together. A picket fence borders the other side of the road, and there is a building with a man in the doorway. An African-American man is working in the doorway of another building, sawing wood. Smoke is issuing from a smokestack, perhaps attached to the building in front of it. Three more factory buildings, each of the same size, are located on the left side of the road behind the picket fence. There is an elevated walkway in between the first and second buildings. Men are visible in the windows, and a horse-drawn carriage is visible by the closest building. Trees dot the landscape, in a row along the road leading to the background.
NotesSubject Note: The Hayward Rubber Company was founded in 1847 and flourished for much of the remainder of the nineteenth century, closing in 1893. The building subsequently burned to the ground.
