DescriptionPhotographs show the storefront and interiors of the Dwight Slate Machine Company, located at 262 Main Street, Hartford. Signs read: "Dwight Slate Machine Co." "Fine Tools" and "Special Machinery." Interiors include the offices, with Dwight Slate, H.B. Slate, H.N. Hinckley, Jessie Ronald, and George Leffingwell; a forge with blacksmith Watt (Bill) Nye and Jack Leas; the tool room with Risley Johnson, Leo Kelly, and Collins; the Grinding Room with Leas, Myers, Stuart, and Covey. Other employees include John Benson, H.B. Slate, Morgan Johnson, George Roussos ("the Greek"), Clarence Bell, Foy, Barlow, Grimm, Pinney, Kinnure, Wheeler, Fuller, Brink, Kuernzli [?], Dalton, Arnold, Lyman, Rodda, Hindle, Grover Newhaus, Richards, and Gladwin. Some interiors include desks, typewriters, workbenches, and various types of tools and machinery.
NotesSubject Note: A display ad in the 1895 Hartford City Directory states that the Dwight Slate Machine Company made "the well known Sensitive Drills (copyrighted trade mark).... Automatic Geer Cutters, Automatic Pinion Cutters, Milling Machines, Fine Bench Lathes... We have experienced Tool and Model Makers, and are prepared to do model work on Guns, Typewriters, and the finer classes of mechanisms."
