DescriptionCherry stand with drawer in the late Chippendale or early Federal style. The stand has a round top with a lipped, molded edge; the top is supported from below by a trapezoidal cleat, or block of wood. A rectangular opening in the cleat contains a shallow drawer that can be accessed from either side of the table. The pedestal consists of a compressed ball over a slender cone, over a second compressed ball, over a cylindrical base and three cabriole legs each ending in a pad foot. Each end of the drawer has a brass knob.
Condition: There are many light scratches on the top surface of the stand. The cleat may be replaced. The pins are missing from the cleat. There is a split in the top and base of the pedestal. The feet are well worn and scratched; the stand probably had longer feet at one time. A small wooden pad is nailed to the underside of each foot. One brass knob is loose.
Design and Construction Details: The round top and molding are formed from a solid piece of wood. The top is nailed to each end of the rectangular cleat from the underside. The pedestal is tenoned and pinned into the cleat (the pins are now missing). Each leg is dovetailed to the base of the pedestal. Three strips of iron are nailed to the underside of the pedestal base, where the legs join the base. Each end of the drawer is a drawer front, and each drawer front is formed from a solid piece of wood. The drawer sides are flat on top. The drawer bottom is nailed onto a lap joint on the underside of the front and sides of the drawer. A curved strip of iron is nailed into a notch in one side of the drawer surround; this holds the drawer in place.
