DescriptionRound redware plate with slip decoration beneath a clear lead glaze. The plate was formed by trailing white slip over the clay to form an undulating line, then the words, "Clam / Potpie", over a short line. Then, the clay was draped over a rounded mold to give it its shape, before tooling the edge with a roulette wheel. The top surface of the plate is glazed, which gives the white slip a yellow appearance; the bottom is left unglazed.

There is minor wear to the glaze in the center of the plate. A crack runs from the rim of the plate toward the center, and there are two chips in the rim. There is some evidence of prior repair to the slip decoration and glaze on the plate. Flakes in the slip decoration and glaze on the base of the "l" and the upper left corner of the "m" look like they were filled in with a glossy yellow substance. A similar substance may have been used to repair select portions of the "ott" on the word below.
