DescriptionFour men stand in the left foreground. The man at the right is dripping wet, and has evidently just fallen through the ice of a frozen lake or pond. He wears a coat, vest, shirt, and necktie or scarf. He has an ice skate strapped to his right foot. His left foot is bare except for a ragged sock. Two of the men wear large top hats with the words "HUMANE / Society" on the brims. One of them has his left arm around the first man's armpit. He holds a grappling hook attached to a long rope in his right hand. The other holds what appears to be a gaff. The fourth man, at the far left, wears an overcoat, breeches, and spats. He holds a wicker basket over his right arm with a label on it that reads: "Brandy / Balls". He holds a glass in his right hand and a bottle with a cork in it in his left hand. A label on the bottle reads: "A Drop / of / GOOD / GIN". A hole in the ice is at the right. A sign reads: "DANGEROUS". A man leans on the sign and uses a cane to try and reach a hat floating in the water. Four other skaters, one of them falling backwards, are in the right background.
