He is looking at a large open book that he holds in his lap. A small boy stands beside him, also looking at the book. An older boy is seated behind the table, with his right hand resting on a book. Two other books and a bouquet of flowers are on the table. A landscape painting in a gilt frame hangs on the wall in the right background. A window with fringed drapery is in the left background.
