DescriptionSeveral large and small vessels are sailing past a beach. Most are square-rigged and fly American flags and pennants. At least two ships, at the far left and the third from the right, appear to be flying French flags as well. The second vessel from the left is a steamboat. Smoke issues from its smokestack. Two vessels are rigged fore and aft; one appears to be a sloop. A small skiff is in the left foreground. Several rowboats are also in the water, two with men at the oars, two apparently towed behind one of the ships. Another small boat with oars is on the beach in the foreground. A man and boy stand nearby. Four other people are on a bluff at the right, a man in a smock, a man in a top hat and coat, a seated man and woman, and a reclining man.
