DescriptionThree-quarter-length view of a young girl standing out-of-doors. She wears a dress with a wide neckline and a V-shaped waistline. The neckline and the short sleeves are edges with lace. A necklace of beads or pearls is around her neck. Two ribbon bows are in her hair. In her left hand, she holds a wicker basket containing roses with their leaves. In her right hand, she holds a bunch of leaves, possibly parsley. An elaborate birdcage or birdhouse is at the right. A small bird sits on a circular or semicircular perch, to which it is tied with a string. A small vaselike container, presumably for food or water, hangs from chains below. A small picket fence surrounds the lower platform of the birdhouse. A wall and a latticework trellis with leaves growing on it are in the right background. A grassy lawn and trees are in the left background. The picture is surrounded by an oval frame, decorated with a fruit basket, two flower baskets, and two cornucopias.

NotesTitle Note: The title probably alludes to a 1792 musical drama by Prince Hoare with the same name. (Finlay 3/4/2004)On View
